Volunteers Wanted to Work as “Reminiscence Friends”

Book of You is looking to recruit volunteer “Reminiscence Friends” to support people with dementia in the community through life reminiscence.
So far, our work has taken place within care homes and in small social groups (usually with Alzheimer’s Society) in the community. We’ve recently been successful in securing funding from Gwynt y Mor and The Dulverton Trust which will allow us to help those more isolated people with dementia in Conwy, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham, and we aim to do this by training a group of volunteers who would then work with people either on a one to one basis in the person’s own home, or in small social groups. We would provide the tablet computers, dongles (if necessary) to run the sessions, and full reminiscence/Book of You training including a Dementia Friends Awareness sessions. We would also pay for a DBS check, if they don’t already have one.
We are hoping to find 8 volunteers across Conwy, Flintshire and Denbighshire who will help 21 people with dementia and 20 volunteers in the Wrexham area who would help 25 people with dementia. Volunteers would need to have at least a basic level of computers as our life story books are digital and not printed (see our website for more details). We would then look at finding the isolated people who they can work with (hopefully these will be living as close to the volunteers as possible, although travel expenses will be covered if this isn’t possible).
