----------------------------------------------
This Community Book is not an historical record but rather the recollections of a group of Portuguese speaking residents who have settled in Wrexham. They were happy to share photographs and memories of their journey.
We all know that the memory can sometimes play tricks and one person's recollection might be slightly different to another's but all memories are important and so all have been included here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
CPLP is made up of nine countries. They were all once part of the former Portuguese Empire. These countries are: Portugal, Angola, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde, Brazil, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Timor and Macau
Each country is now independent and mixes its own unique culture with Portuguese influences.
In our Group there were contributions from members from Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, Mozambique and Brazil.
Other members of the Group who were unable to attend were from Cape Verde, Angola, Ukraine, England and Wales.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Members of the group came to Wrexham at different times in their lives and by different routes.
One common element was the pull of children and grandchildren already here.
For one member arriving in Wales was as a result of a conversation in her home town with a Welsh social worker followed by a very long drive across Europe and England finally settling in Wrexham.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
HIRAETH: is commonly translated as 'Homesickness' but it is more than that. It means a deep sense of longing, a yearning for that which has passed, a sense of homesickness tinged with grief or sorrow over the lost or departed.
The Portuguese language has a similar word: SAUDADE or SODADE: a word for a feeling or nostalgic longing for something or someone that one was fond of and which has been lost.

---------------------------------------------------------
Wow! Gigi was so glamorous, no wonder she was chosen to be Miss Mozambique.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raquel was finding it hard to live in Lisbon with no work available so, when she met a lady from Johnstown who suggested she might like Wrexham as a place to live, she got in her car and drove here!
One thing that amazed her was the age to which women work here. In Portugal women over their mid 30s are rarely employed, younger women regularly being favoured by employers.
The first time she saw a woman who was clearly in her 50/60s working at the checkout in the local supermarket - she was very surprised.

--------------------------------------
The Group loves cooking its traditional dishes and so the Feast of Nations in March was a wonderful opportunity to showcase their favourite foods.
---------------------------------------
As well as the food there was much fun had with music, dancing and a fashion show.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Carnation Revolution was a military coup by left leaning military officers that overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime on 25th April 1974.
It resulted in the Portuguese transition to democracy and the end of the Portuguese Colonial Wars.
The Carnation Revolution got its name from the fact that almost no shots were fired and from restaurant worker Celeste Caeiro offering carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship.
In Portugal 25th April is a national holiday - Freedom Day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is claimed that fado origins go back to 15th century, when women cried with their longing for their husbands that sailed to the never ending seas.
Amalia Rodrigues is still the most recognisable Portuguese name in music along with more recent acts like Dulce Pontes and Mariza.
---------------------------------------
Regional folk music, like Cante Alentejano, remains popular too, having been updated and modernised in may cases.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cape Verde is known internationally for Morna, a form of folk music usually sung in Cape Verdean Creole, accompanied by clarinet, violin, guitar and cavaquinho.
In 2011, it would be one of the most recent countries to have its own music award, the Cabo Verde Music Awards was established and awards the greatest songs of the year by Cape Verdean artists (and those of abroad).

Filigrana or filigree jewellery in gold and silver is popular in Lisbon and elsewhere in Portugal.
------------------------------------------
The art of ornamental openwork made of fine gold or silver wire dates to ancient times, often objects d'art.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are many points of similarity between British and Portuguese cuisine.
The Portuguese diet is heavily based upon meat and fish but, whilst vegetables are served with meals, a vegetarian would find their choices a little limited!
In addition to the more familiar meats there is the addition of recipes for goat (kid) and piglet.
Portuguese cooks are very keen to use every possible part of the animal to avoid waste.

--------------------------------------
Pasteis de nata were created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Hieronymites Monastery in Lisbon.
At the time, convents and monasteries used large quantities of egg-whites for starching clothes and religious habits.
It was quite common for monasteries and convents to use the leftover egg yolks to make cakes and pastries, resulting in the proliferation of sweet pastry recipes throughout the country.
